It is necessary to understand this, because special investigations have not been conducted in Russia on this problem. However, it is widely known that:
- nicotine during smoking is absorbed into a woman's blood, and then excreted with milk;
- the effect of nicotine on the body of an adult is studied, therefore, on the child's organism too, because he goes there with the mother's milk.
How does nicotine work on the body?
- Influence on the gastrointestinal tract: the motor activity of the intestines increases (on the contrary, it decreases at high doses), first increases, then the work of the salivary glands is inhibited;
- Influence on the respiratory system: breathing first increases, then the work of the bronchial glands is inhibited;
- Influence on the cardiovascular system: blood pressure rises, first slows down, then heart rate is increased;
- Influence on the nervous system: short excitation and prolonged inhibition; In addition, there is trembling of the hands, and at high doses - convulsions; nausea and vomiting (as a result of the influence of nicotine on certain areas of the brain).
Symptoms of chronic nicotine poisoning:
- double vision in the eyes,
- increased blood pressure,
- disruption of the heart,
- increased intestinal motility,
- decrease in acidity of gastric juice,
- inflammatory processes of the mucous in the airways (inflammation of the bronchi, lungs, pharynx, larynx),
- various disorders in the central nervous system.
Now imagine that from the mother during breastfeeding, a portion of the nicotine enters the baby's body, and in it produces all the aforesaid destructive actions.
Influence of smoking of mother on an organism of the kid
Watching the children, whose mothers did not stop smoking during the period of breastfeeding, found the following:
- children regurgitate, poorly gain weight, suffer from intestinal colic;
- they do not sleep well, they often cry unreasonably, are easily excitable, neurological consequences of birth traumas are more pronounced in them;
- these children have reduced immunity, they often suffer from colds;
- if the mother smokes constantly, the child has a dependence on nicotine, and when he suddenly stops receiving it with the mother's milk, signs of abstinence appear: the child does not suck well and sleeps, becomes very restless, regurgitation intensifies.
In addition, nicotine slows the production of the hormone prolactin, stimulating the excretion of breast milk, hence, over time, the amount of milk in the smoking woman decreases. The quality of milk also decreases: it reduces the amount of hormones, vitamins and antibodies.
Even more dangerous for the child is smoking passive when the mother or another person smokes in the room in which the baby is. Such smoking causes more harm to others than to the person who smokes.
Is it possible to reduce harm to the child when smoking a nursing mother
After 30-40 minutes after smoking in the woman's blood, the highest concentration of nicotine, the minimum it becomes after 1, 5 hours. Completely nicotine is removed from the blood after 3 hours. Therefore, if there is no possibility, as well as the desire to quit smoking, it is worth to reduce the number of cigarettes smoked, and choose the most safe time for smoking.
If a woman decides to quit while breastfeeding, then it can help:
- methods of reflexotherapy - the impact on the points on the skin, by various methods, as a result of which the desire to smoke disappears;
- treatment by a therapist - he will individually select the most appropriate treatment for a given woman;
- mouth rinse with silver nitrate or a tincture of ink nuts - this causes an aversion to smoking;
- drug-assisted therapy - the use of drugs that are similar in effect to nicotine, for example, special patches or nicotine gum, which give a lower concentration in the blood of nicotine than cigarette smoking; but you should know that such drugs can not be combined with smoking in a nursing woman, since this can increase the concentration of nicotine in the blood.
Smoking causes irreparable harm to human health, and if a nursing mother smokes, this harm increases many times.
