Biography of the famous Mexican artist is a stormy mix of the brightest emotions, lyrical experiences, deep and at the same time ironic outlook on life, romance novels and endless physical pain. After her death, people remained not only her paintings, but also this biography, imbued with an iron will, passionate love and life challenges that fell to the share of this small and frail woman in appearance. Hollywood directors lined up for the right to shoot a film about her, based on her life was put the ballet and not one theatrical production. And although almost 60 years have passed since her death, she continues to admire and adore her to this day. Difficult childhood
Born Frila Kalo in the suburb of Mexico City - Kaokane July 6, 1907. Father Guilermo Kalo was a Hungarian Jewish immigrant, was engaged in photography, and Mitylda Kalo's mother was a Spaniard born in America. Since his early childhood, Frieda was haunted by illness and physical suffering. So, at 6 years old she had polio, which caused complications on the bone system, and the girl remained lame for life - the bones of one of her legs became very thin. In her childhood on the street, she was teased because of this "Frida - bone leg". But the proud little girl all the luck still actively chased the neighbors with the ball and even boxed. And on her thin, painful leg she put on a few stockings so that she looked as healthy.
At the age of 16 she was admitted to the school "Pripatoria" at the Medical Faculty, where she quickly gained an indisputable authority among the students due to her iron character and propensity for shocking.
The tragedy and the beginning of the creative path
At the age of 18, the first of two vital fractures occurred. On an autumn evening, she was returning home with her friend when their car crashed into a tram at high speed. The young man was thrown from the impact through the window, but he got off with light bruises. Frida was much less fortunate. Iron rod from the tram stuck in her stomach, pierced the peritoneum and uterus, which actually put an end to her future motherhood. Broken hip, spinal injury in several places, eleven fractures of polio-dried feet, dislocation of the foot and clavicle ...
Frieda made more than 30 operations. But the thirst for life and the habit of fighting to the end still prevailed, and even despite the terrible injuries, she stood and did not lose heart. Later she very often went to the hospital and spent several months there - the consequences of the accident were pursued for the rest of her life. After that tragedy, she spent almost a year lying on a hospital bed. And that's when she took on the colors. To the novice artist was able to write without getting out of bed, she designed a special stretcher and installed over the bed a large mirror in which the girl could see herself. Frida began her artistic career with self-portraits, which predetermined all her future work. "I write myself, because I am very much alone with myself, and because I am the one that I know best," said Kalo later.
A man of all life
The second turning point in Frida's life was the acquaintance with her future husband, Diego Rivera. He was one of the most influential and famous artists in Mexico at the time. In addition, he was an ardent supporter of communist ideas, an opponent of the bourgeois system and a first-class speaker.
Appearance Riveira was quite impressive: a giant with disheveled hair, a huge belly and no less huge protruding eyes. In his paintings, Diego himself often portrayed himself in the form of a thick-toothed toad holding someone's heart in his paws. And indeed, women went crazy from him, and he did not leave them without attention. And once he even admitted that "the more I love women, the more I want to make them suffer." This was the whole of Rivera. And the young Frida fell under his enchanting charm.
They met when Frida was still a teenager. Diego Rivera painted the walls in the school "Pripatoria", where she then studied. He was older than her for 20 years. The young schoolgirl tried in every possible way to draw the attention of this respectable, well-known and incredibly charming artist. She ran after him, teasing "old Festo," and one day she boldly declared to fellow students: "I will definitely marry this macho." So all also has turned out. After a car accident and a hard year on a hospital bed Frida came to Diego to show their work written in this difficult period. Riveira was amazed, however, not known, the more: the painting of Kalo or herself.
They got married when Frieda was 22 years old. After the wedding, they moved to live in the legendary later "blue house" - a dwelling of indigo color, located in Mexico City, often depicted on the canvases of Frida.
Uncommon family life and creativity
The family life of Frida Kahlo and Diego Reveira was like an erupting volcano. Their relationship was full of passion and fire, but at the same time full of torment and jealousy. Five years after the beginning of family life, Diego changed Frida with her own sister. And he did not hide this completely, knowing what pain his wife causes. For Frida, it was a blow in the back. Overflowing with resentment and bitterness, she poured her emotions onto the canvas. Perhaps she wrote one of the most tragic of her works: a naked dead girl lies on the floor, her body is covered with deep cuts, and above it there is a killer, holding a knife in her hand and looking indifferently at her victim: "Only a couple of scratches!" - a multi-talked and bitterly ironic title of the picture.
Frida was wounded by her husband's escapade and began to start intrigues on her side. Riveira was furious with this behavior of his wife. Sam desperate ladies' man, he was terribly jealous and intolerant of his wife's novels.
There were rumors of Frida's connection with Leon Trotsky. The disgraced 60-year-old revolutionary, arriving in Mexico, settled in the house of the ideological communists of Calo and Reveira, and fell in love with a live and charming Frida. However, their romance was not long. It is said that the young artist was simply tired of the intrusive attention of the "old man" and he had to leave the "blue house".
Unable to withstand mutual infidelity and constant quarrels, Frida and Diego decided to divorce in 1939. Frida goes to America, where her paintings are very popular. However, she feels lonely and devastated in the noisy and pompous New York. In addition, being apart, the former spouses realize that despite all the differences, they can not live without each other. And so in 1940 they again marry and never parted.
The couple did not manage to have a baby. Although these attempts did not leave them very long. Three times Frida was pregnant, but all three times the pregnancy ended in a miscarriage. The artist loved to draw children. But for the most part dead. Although the bulk of her paintings are full of light, sun, life, national color and bright colors, but there are canvases where the main motive is sadness, anguish and even cruelty. After all, her works are a reflection of her own life: bright and tragic at the same time.
Last years Frida has spent chained to a wheelchair - the old trauma does not give her rest, so much so that she is doing some more operations on the spine and amputating her leg.
Frieda Kalo died in 1954 from pneumonia when she was 47 years old. "I'm waiting with a smile, when I leave this world and I hope never to return." Frida "are the last words written in her diary, the words of farewell to this world. At her funeral, the sea of admirers, admirers and comrades-in-arms gathered. Having received recognition and immense popularity during her lifetime, she continues to excite the minds of many people and after her death.
