How to walk a dog properly

Every walk in the open air is vital for every dog. This is done not only to cope with natural needs outside the apartment walls, but also, equally important, in order to maintain the health and immunity of your pet at the proper level. But there are several general recommendations that should be followed by all dog owners.

How to properly walk a dog, the general rules for all breeds:

  1. Walk the dog, as well as feed, should not more than 2-3 people from the family. This will protect you from disobedience of the pet and the risk of losing it during a walk.
  2. Walking with a dog is preferable before eating. An average adult urban dog usually needs two walks a day for at least 30 minutes. First you should give your pet plenty to run into, giving him certain physical exertion and then start working out the teams if the walk is combined with the training process.
  3. To accustom the dog to walks should be in the places remote from road, aside from other dogs and the big congestion of people. All these are distracting factors for your pet and can make it too excited and uncontrollable. Accustoming to the environment should be gradual, so that your dog does not get out of control. But, at the same time, you do not have to pull it out again, giving different commands and drawing attention to yourself.
  4. For walking in urban conditions it is very important to teach the dog to walk on a leash. The collar should be selected correctly, tightly fit the dog's neck so that she can not pull it off. Leash should be chosen rather long, but with additional fixation. Before you start walking with your pet, let him get used to the collar and leash at home.
  5. If your dog is still a small puppy, but already passed all the necessary vaccinations, you should take him out to the street more often, 15-20 minutes after each feeding and also after his awakening. In this case, you need to closely monitor his behavior: as soon as he starts to fuss, run around the apartment in search of a cozy corner, you must immediately grab it and carry it to the street. Do not walk with your pet on the same route, let the walks will be more diverse and interesting, which will allow the puppy to get better acquainted with the surrounding world.
  6. Green areas, squares and parks are the best places for walking a dog, properly approaching the question. Next to schools, kindergartens and playgrounds (and in their territories), the walking of dogs is strictly prohibited. In the summer, if possible, we must take out our four-footed animals for nature. Remember that every dog needs long, long walks from time to time.
  7. Some dog owners are sure that an adult dog of one paddock per day is enough. This is fundamentally wrong. Most likely, this opinion appears due to elementary laziness or employment of the owners. Each walk (at least two per day, and for medium-sized breeds - three) should last at least 25 minutes (in winter, in severe frosts, you can walk for 10-15 minutes so as not to freeze the dog).

It's right to walk the dog in the winter

The duration of winter walks is primarily affected by the breed of the dog. Rather, the fitness of this particular breed to weather conditions of the environment. It is quite natural that dogs of short-haired and small breeds on the street freeze much faster than their more furry fellow tribesmen - Newfoundland or chauuchau. Also during winter walks, you need to pay attention to the health of the dog. If her body is weakened by illness, she may not be able to withstand long walks in the cold. All this applies to dogs that have been vaccinated.

Full walks help your pets to stay healthy and strong. Because of their nature, dogs are used to being constantly on the road, so you should consider this and give your dog a proper value.
