Hymenocallis (Hymenocallis Salisb) belongs to the family of amaryllis. Hymenocallis means "beautiful film". To date, there are data on 60 species of plants of this family that grow in South America, mainly in the tropics and subtropics. They are common in the mountains, near river banks and valleys. Hymenocallis is Caribbean (in translation from Latin Hymenocalliscaribaea), otherwise it is called Pankratum caribian (Latin Pancratiumcaribaeum). Place of growth of the coast near the sea of ​​the Antilles. The hymenocallis of the Caribbean has a rounded bulb with a diameter of 10 cm. The leaves are 90 cm long and about 7 cm wide, the leaves are sharp, belt-shaped, tapering at the base. Its flowers are connected in inflorescences of umbellate form. Make up from 6 to 12 fragrant, white, large flowers. The peduncle is flat, without leaves. The stamen filaments are joined together by a membranous membrane, reaching half the length, resembling the crown of a narcissus. Anthers have an orange-colored color. Winter flowering.

The hymenocallis is pleasant, otherwise it is also called the Early Hymenocallis (Latin Hymenocallisfestalis) - an onion, perennial plant. The diameter of the bulb is about 10 cm, which is lowered by 2/3 in the nutrient medium. The color of the leaves is dark green, belt-shaped, their length reaches 40 cm, width 7 cm. The flower spike is approximately 70 cm, without leaves, has from 3 to 5 flowers collected in inflorescences, umbellate. Perianth have six lobes, fused at the base, which extend in long strips. Half a length of fused stamens resemble the crown of a narcissus. Anthers have an orange color. Fragrant flowers reach 10 cm in diameter. In winter, during rest, the leaves fall off. From July to September - the flowering period.

Features of care.

Hymenocallis needs a bright location, it does not hurt a small amount of direct sun rays. Favorable location at the windows of the western and eastern sides. It is necessary to create a shadow with a southern location. When there is a plant on the northern side, there is a lack of light. After the flowering period, the hymenocallis must be placed in the garden during the summer time, and again with the arrival of September, it should be placed in the apartment. If it is located outdoors in summer, it is necessary to choose a place with daylight scattered sunlight. To avoid sunburn, the Gimenokallis must be gradually accustomed to new lighting. For transplantation, loose and nutritious soil is taken. In composition it can be humus earth and foliar humus (one part), 1-2 parts sod, ½ part sand and ½ part peat.
