Primrose in the garden - recommendations for growing

Tips and advice on planting and caring for the primula.
Primula in translation from Latin means "first" and this flower is not just called this way. After all, it blooms the very first among other garden plants, when the land is not even covered with early spring greens. If you choose the right varieties, then it will bloom on your flower bed from spring to mid-year. Some even twice, decorating the autumn garden.

In nature, this plant can be found mainly in the Himalayas, the mountainous part of Asia and China. But there are species that grow in North America, Europe and Africa. But in order to grow such exotic things in your flowerbed, you must adhere to certain rules of cultivation and provide the plant with proper care.

Rules for growing primroses and caring for them

In fact, the cultivation of primulas directly depends on the variety, but there is one common feature - all of them, without exception, like open areas with enough sunlight and a shadow in the daytime heat. Therefore, when choosing a site, it is better to stop on the ground in the immediate vicinity of the house or in the shade of the trees. So the plants will receive enough sunlight, but at the same time they will get the necessary shade in the heat.

Soil should keep water well, so if there is clay soil in your area, it will not grow primrose. But if you really want to see these flowers in your flowerbed, sand it with sand, moss and organic fertilizers.

The plant does not need special care. To bright flowering pleased the eye, you need to fertilize the flower bed with phosphorus-potassium fertilizers at least three times during the growing season. Intensively watered primrose is also not worth it. On good soil, it will have enough natural precipitation, but if the soil is poor in nutrients and liquid, it is worthwhile to apply regular watering with the addition of fertilizers in the water.

How to correctly transplant and multiply primrose

  1. Division of bushes. The primula grows very actively and approximately every three years the bushes need to be excavated and divided into separate plants. Do this best in August, when the active flowering has passed, and the root system began to prepare for the winter. Thus, the plant will have time to adapt to winter.
  2. Seeds can propagate primrose in principle all year round. But it is best to sow them in November and December. Crops should be kept in a room with a temperature of up to twenty degrees with high humidity and good lighting. In ten days, shoots will appear, after which intensive watering and lighting can be stopped and wait until the beginning of spring. Then the seedlings can be moved to separate pots for further transplantation into the open ground.
  3. If your primrose has a weak root system, it can not be propagated by a bush. Then it is better to separate from the bottom of the petiole leaf with the kidney and a piece of shoot and place in the substrate. The conditions of detention should be the same as when planting seeds. Soon the buds will give shoots, which are transplanted into separate pots, and in the setting of warm weather - and into the open ground.

Diseases of the plant

Primrose is especially prone to the spotting caused by fungal diseases. You can see the signs of the disease already at the end of spring or in the early summer. First the spots look pale, but gradually become gray or brown with a yellow border. If you do not take any action, they will cover with a touch, the leaves will begin to dry, and the plant - bloom.

To save the primrose, you need to cut off the affected leaves, and the remaining ones should be treated with a solution of foundation stone or topsin. To cure the plant, you can sprinkle at any time, but for prevention it is better to carry out this procedure in the early spring, after flowering or even late autumn.
