Tarkovsky was interested in art from a young age. He went to the Art School named after 1905. However, after graduating from secondary education, the future director did not immediately determine who he wants to become. The boy entered the Arabic department of the Middle East faculty of the Moscow Institute of Oriental Studies. He was interested and he even went to practice in Siberia. There, on the river, the guy spent all three months in a geological expedition. But still, the love for creativity took its toll, and after returning to Moscow, Andrei went to VGIK. There he passed the exams and got into the workshop of Mikhail Romm. Together with him studied a lot of known to date stars of that generation. But most of all on the course stood out with their uncommon talents Andrei Tarkovsky and Vasily Shukshin. By the way, when Shukshin and Tarkovsky took exams, the commission for some reason did not want the guys to be admitted to a higher educational institution. All the teachers told Romm not to take the kids. And he did not agree, taking one and the other. Vasily and Andrey were different, like oil and water. They largely did not converge, but Romma considered that it was just such peculiar personalities that the faculty needed. That's how the guys ended up in his workshop.

Studies and first projects

During his studies, Tarkovsky became very close friends with Konchalovsky. Here they just the same converged views on creativity and life. That is why the guys always performed all the projects assigned to them jointly. They liked working in tandem, sharing ideas. Their thesis work was a short film "A skating rink and a violin". It turned out so interesting and successful that it won the main prize in New York, when there was a competition between student films. This happened in 1961.

After graduation, Tarkovsky got on Mosfilm. The first film he shot was "Ivan's Childhood."
