Guinea pigs - "overseas" guests in our house

If you do not dare to become the owner of an independent cat or temperamental dog, then opt for a pretty guinea pig. This little animal will quickly conquer your heart. Fans of these animals claim that it is a pleasure to keep them. Guinea pigs get on well with kids, they are affectionate and trustful, non-aggressive and never bite. However, all the same, do not forget that the guinea pigs are "overseas" guests in our house. Therefore, to study their features, a little to read about them still will not be superfluous.

Children often ask why this animal has such a name. Earlier, mumps were called "overseas", but eventually the word was simplified to "marine" (they were brought from across the sea, and they cost very dearly). Now we know 23 different species, and they are all inhabitants of South America. In their native lands, guinea pigs are called very beautifully - "aparea". For the first time they were made pets Indians of the Inca tribe.

Let's look at the "pedigree".

For room keeping, mainly guinea pigs belonging to three breeds are offered. The first is defined as a smooth-haired guinea pig. They are the cheapest, they have a high immunity index and the least capriciousness.

The breed of rosette (abyssinian, woolly) guinea pigs also does not require special care. To many, they seem most attractive.

The most beautiful is the long-haired Angora (Peruvian) mumps, but at the same time and the trouble with the content it delivers the most. Her long silky fur should be combed daily and periodically trimming.

Although guinea pig does not take up much space in your apartment, it is worthwhile to think about her home in advance. The cage of the animal must be spacious and be in a bright room. From drafts the animal can catch a cold, get inflammation of the eyes. The proximity of heating appliances, a TV set and a computer is undesirable. True, pigs do not like bright light, so be sure to shade part of the cell. When you are going to bring a new tenant to the house, do not arrange for him a "temporary" from an old aquarium or a cardboard box. The ideal option is a metal cage with a plastic bottom and a removable top. It is durable, hygienic. Inside, make sure you have a rest and sleep house with a hole on the side. Although the animal practically does not smell, it is necessary to change the sawdust daily in the cage. It must also have a feeder and a drinking bowl. In the pet store you will be offered a choice of many accessories for the life and entertainment of the animal. There you can buy ready-made food. In general, the menu of mumps should consist of hay, fruits, vegetables, corn and root vegetables. From drinking you can give milk, broth of dogrose and water.

A hamster is not a mate.

Guinea pigs live up to 6-8 years. It is better to buy two animals at once, they will be more fun together. But keep in mind: in four weeks mumps become sexually mature, and then males and females embark on a procreation program.

The duration of gestation in pigs is 60-70 days. The number of cubs is from one to five. Males, brought up together, tend to be friendly to each other. Perfectly get along together and several females with one male. And they will necessarily have a leader from among the ladies.

Very good guinea pigs get along with dwarf rabbits. Often rabbits even begin to take care of them: protect, warm and lick the "little one". With mice, hamsters and rats, mumps is not very comfortable. A cat often refers to a small animal as a prey and can frighten and even drive an animal. But the dog, if it is taken to the house by the puppy, will learn to take the mumps as a member of the family and even to enjoy the communication with it. Also, you should not keep mumps and birds in the same house. Not only do birds often steal food, they can still peck or injure an animal.
