This type of anesthesia is now increasingly used for the anesthesia of physiological labor and in childbirth, complicated by high blood pressure, gestosis, breech presentation of the fetus, and also during the operation of cesarean section. The condition of the newborn is affected by many factors: "The effect of the use of medications depends on the dosage of drugs, the length of labor and the initial condition of the child; In rare cases, as a result of the use of analgesia in a newborn, there may be breathing disorders, as well as a decrease in the heart rate. But in general, as studies show, epidural anesthesia is safe for the mother and child. Now we know how to perform medical anesthesia during childbirth.
Types of anesthesia
- Local anesthesia is used to anesthetize the tissues of the perineum, is more often used for episiotomy - the perineal incision, and after delivery, when seams are applied. On the state of the child this type of anesthesia is not affected.
- General anesthesia is currently used only in extreme cases, rarely - during the operation of a cesarean section. The parturient is in an unconscious state. In the first minutes, when the baby is still in the uterine cavity, safer analgesics are injected, which practically do not affect the newborn. In rare cases, the baby may have a decrease in heart rate and respiration. As a rule, this happens in the event of any technical difficulties in the extraction of the newborn.
- Inhalation anesthesia. During this procedure, the mother gives birth to an anesthetic with the help of a special mask. Most often for this purpose a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen is used. Nitrous oxide is a rather weak drug. The mechanism of anesthesia is based on a sense of euphoria in the process of its application, which makes the contractions less tangible. If the inhalation anesthesia is used for a fairly long time, the heart rate may decrease in the newborn, and there is a likelihood that it will be born with a lower Apgar score. This type of anesthesia of the generic process is practically not used at present.
- Epidural anesthesia - during this procedure, a special catheter is inserted into the space between the hard shell of the spinal cord and the vertebrae, the so-called epidural space, and a local anesthetic agent is injected through it.
