He was born in London on May 14, 1961 in the family of journalist Ernie and artist Anne Roth. Tim Ernie's father Irish-born Irish grew up in a family of British immigrants and he had the surname Smith, whom he changed after World War II, taking the name "Roth", as not all countries where he was at work were well treated and the second reason why he changed his surname - from solidarity with the victims of the Holocaust.

Since childhood, Tim Roth was already fond of art, and this enthusiasm was encouraged by parents, they took him to theaters, museums, and music. Tim was going to become a sculptor, so he entered the Camberwell School of Art in London, but after a while changed his future profession and decided to become an actor.
