Foreign body in the nasal cavity

Children are bright and unpredictable creatures. Their games sometimes amaze adults by the fact that we, adults, would never have thought of such. And sometimes for children, children use the most unexpected items. Such kind of games are sometimes completely harmless, but it happens that they lead to unpleasant consequences. The foreign body in the nasal cavity is one of such consequences. Here is a child had a game - something to put in his nose. Although, perhaps, this foreign body was in the nasal cavity quite by accident ... But now is not the time to think - the time to help the baby, since this unpleasant situation has already occurred.

As we have already explained, foreign bodies in the nasal cavity can appear both intentionally, during the game, and accidentally, due to a combination of circumstances. In addition, the foreign body in the cavity of the baby's nose can be not only because he inhaled it, but on the other hand - from the nasopharynx, for example, if the baby ate and suddenly choked with a piece of food.

It is not always possible to understand immediately that a child has something stuck in the nasal cavity, especially if you were not present when all this happened. At the same time, the baby can not always explain that a foreign body has entered his spout. Therefore, it will be useful to know the main signs that there is still something in the nasal cavity. All these signs of the child will manifest immediately after an unpleasant situation has occurred, and your task is only to consider entering into the nasal cavity of the foreign body in order to start the first aid. So, back to the features:

1) the child began to complain that his nose hurts, and one nasal passage hardly misses the air, that is, breathing is difficult;

2) when a foreign body enters the nose, local bleeding may occur;

3) there may be no bleeding, but there are mucous discharges from the nose (more precisely, from the nasal passage where the foreign object is stuck), and they do not stop for a long period of time.

Now let's figure it out with the first help that any adult should provide to the injured child, who was close by. What should I do in a situation where a baby's nasal passage is hit by an object?

1. If your child is old enough and smart, and you can ask him not to breathe with a nose, and breathe with your mouth - do it.

2. Now try to do one maneuver, which can help the child to get rid of the foreign body in the nasal passage. First, determine which nostril breathes freely (that is, the one in which there is nothing), and then close it properly, press it with your finger, so that no air comes through it or exits. Now let the baby breathe the air as deep as possible, and exhale with force through the second, "hammered" nostril. He must feel - whether the foreign body has progressed on the nasal passage, has approached the exit, or has remained in place. If the procedure is successful (i.e., the foreign body is advancing towards the exit), then it should be repeated until the nostril is released.

3. However, whatever you do, there is no better way to clean the spout of unwanted particles or objects than sneezing. It can be induced artificially - it is only necessary to inhale a little ground pepper.

4. If this unpleasant situation has occurred with a very small child who can not yet understand your requirements, which makes it impossible to carry out the above maneuvers, then the following method may be useful to you. Close your thumb with a healthy nostril (and you should know which one is healthy, at least because, most likely, the kid with you stuffed something into his nose, as well as by how each nostril breathes), and make child sharp exhalation in the mouth.

5. All these techniques usually help to remove from the nasal passages of the foreign body, but if you do not get anything, and in the nasal cavity there is still a foreign object - then you need to urgently go to the doctor.

    Also, doctors recommend not to start rescue actions (that is, what we just talked about-nostril clamping, sudden exhalation and so on), until you drip special vasoconstrictive droplets into the small affected spout. And they should be in the form of drops, use for these purposes, spray or aerosol is strictly not recommended, since the pressure of the drug can only deepen the foreign body in the nasal cavity of the child.

    Now I would like to tell you about when to seek medical help. So, if you have already completed the whole complex of rescue activities that have produced the result and pushed the foreign body out of the child's nasal cavity, but even after that, there is a heavy bleeding that you can not stop in any way. Also, you need to see a doctor when, after removing the foreign body, breathing does not return to normal for at least 24 hours and can not be restored, while the child still complains of painful sensations, and liquid substance continues to be released from the affected nasal passage.

    In such a situation, when even a trifle threatens the child's health, an important rule is not to take his eyes off him and not leave one, especially if the child is very small and does not understand that by his own actions he can do much more harm to himself. What can not be done in case there is something in the nasal cavity?

    - you can not try to release the nasal passage from what you do not even see;

    - You can not try to remove the foreign body with tweezers, cotton swabs and similar items, since they can only shove the object even further;

    - You can not pinch that nostril with a finger in which a foreign body is stuck;

    - do not try to flush the spout;

    - if you can not help anything and therefore called an ambulance - then do not give the child any food and drink until the doctors arrive.

    In principle, almost any potentially dangerous situation can be avoided, you just need to develop certain rules of conduct and safety in games. If your child is very small - do not let him play with toys that consist of small parts. This includes plastic rattles with small balls. In addition, you can not leave the kids themselves unattended - until they reach a certain age, when such stupid games will not be of interest to them.
