Irritable Bowel Syndrome in Children

If the baby has a frequent stool of normal or liquid consistency, then parents should immediately consult a doctor. Also a reason for visiting a specialist are frequent constipation. This is due to the fact that the cause of all these symptoms can be a serious disease, which in no case can be triggered - irritable bowel syndrome. In addition to these symptoms, the child may have bloating, tearfulness, flatulence, etc. Among children, this disease occurs with the same frequency as among adults.

After carrying out epidemiological studies, it was found that symptoms that occur in this disease occur in 6% of secondary and 14% in high school; more than half of children with abdominal pain syndrome with exacerbations, 14 to 25% of the adult population in developed countries.

Symptoms

This syndrome in children manifests itself in the form of violations of the functioning of the intestine and pancreas, and there are no apparent reasons for the occurrence of such disorders. The body constantly appears and does not go through inflammation, and the child even before the age of one year has an intolerance to a product. The course of the disease is characterized by constipation, followed by diarrhea, pain syndrome in the stomach (pain can occur suddenly and also suddenly disappear, but sometimes the pain is strong and prolonged).

If the syndrome is not treated, the course of the disease can be very long and, as a result, lead to serious inflammation in the intestine. Although it is worth noting that in some cases the symptoms of the disease go with themselves with age. However, the sooner parents bring their child to a gastroenterologist for examination, the better.

Treatment

If the doctor confirms the diagnosis, then he should explain in detail to the parents and the child what the essence of this disease is. First, parents need to be reassured by the fact that the disease is not severe and does not lead to the development of severe pathologies in the future, for example, cancer. But too optimistic to look at the disease, too, is not worth it. It is necessary to understand that the disease can disturb a person all his life, and the course can proceed with severe relapses and temporary calmdown of symptoms. How often there will be relapses, and how long the periods of calm will last, depends on the patient himself. It is important the patient's attitude to his illness, his way of life, diet, way of thinking, etc. The specialist in each case needs to determine the characteristics inherent in each family, indicate existing or possible traumatic factors, possible overload at home or at school to help them eliminate. It should be warned that the child should not be overprotected, no matter how hard the patient was. This is due to the fact that such an attitude can lead to "withdrawal to the disease", and this will make the disease more difficult. But whatever happens, parents should remain optimistic.

The regime of the day for the child should be stable and contain enough time for walking, rest and sports. Visiting the toilet should be regular and preferably at a certain time, in a calm and comfortable environment.

It is necessary to adhere to the diet: you need to reduce the number of foods with a high carbohydrate content (sweet, porridge), exclude carbonated drinks, milk, chewing gum, smoked foods and marinades, as well as products containing coarse fiber. If the patient is suffering from constipation, then sugar can be replaced with sorbitol or xylitol, porridge and soups add bran (up to two tablespoons per day), use dried apricots, prunes, honey and figs. If the disease manifests itself as diarrhea, then you should eat only in a warm form. It is desirable to eat baked apples, rice, loose broth, crackers. Raw vegetables during periods of relapse it is better not to eat. In addition, it is necessary to take into account the individual characteristics. To achieve maximum effect, it is desirable to maintain a food diary, on the basis of which it is necessary to make a diet.

Treatment with medicines is only necessary for those in whom the above measures do not give the desired effect.
