On the Apgar scale - height and weight

The kid gives it in the first minutes after birth. This is the so-called Apgar score. Strictly speaking, this evaluation contains information intended primarily for doctors, not for parents.

But, as you know, the newly mum is interested in literally everything that concerns her crumbs. So let's understand together what kind of "mark" is put by maternity hospitals to newborn babies? The Apgar scale is a special table for assessing a child's condition in the very first minutes of life. The method itself was proposed by the American physician-anesthesiologist Virginia Apgar in 1952. It was intended for middle-level medical personnel to quickly navigate to which newborn baby should be given more attention. Since the Apgar score is fairly objective, this method continues to serve the same purposes these days. It allows doctors to carry out urgent medical procedures in time, necessary for a specific baby. On the Apgar scale, height and weight are not difficult to assess, most importantly - correctly.

The state of the child's health is assessed by five indicators:

♦ breathing;

♦ palpitations;

♦ Muscle tone;

♦ reflexes;

♦ color of the skin.

No special tests and studies are carried out in the delivery room: the neonatologist, using only his senses and a phonendoscope, examines and listens to the baby and for each of the indicators exposes 0.1 or 2 points. The maximum score is 10. The total score is scored twice: on the first and fifth minute of the baby's life. Therefore, estimates are always two: for example, 8/9 points. At the same time most often to the fifth minute the kid confidently adds 1-2 points. Note that 10 points of modern kids are rare: an unfavorable environment is to blame, and doctors are cautious. Most children gain from 7 to 10 points, and this result is considered good. Such children right in the delivery room should be attached to my mother's breast, and in the future they need only regular care. The condition of a child who received a score of 5-6 is considered satisfactory, but requires some treatment. Well, those children who received 4 points or less need urgent medical help to prevent the development of serious illnesses and even save their lives.

Love does real miracles

At discharge, the Apgar score must be put on the child's exchange card, which must be presented to the district pediatrician of the district polyclinic. Of course, low scores are a signal for the doctor: these children will need more close medical supervision from both the pediatrician and, possibly, the neurologist, cardiologist, orthopedic surgeon and ophthalmologist. Unfortunately, children who received low scores may have some problems in their health. Therefore, the task of parents is to fulfill all the appointments of professionals. At the same time, there is no need to worry too much: the Apgar scale is not at all an assessment of the development and condition of the child as a whole and certainly not an assessment of his intellectual potential. As the long practice shows, children with low points on Apgar fairly quickly catch up if they get enough of mother's milk, soft care and gentle caress. It's no secret that the fluids of parental love conquer any ailments. And parental care, attention, love will allow your baby in the future to be healthy and get high marks regardless of what was exhibited in the ancestral hall. By the way, in one gymnasium class, children with different assessments of Apgar study (there is an "eight-point" boy, there is also a "troeshnik"). But the teacher says that in this class absolutely all students are capable, successful and each is talented in its own way!
