Initially, this breed was called the "European wolf dog", but in the 70's, after recognition, it was renamed the "Sarloss wolf dog."

It should be remembered that these are real dogs, not wolves and not wolf hybrids, although some qualities of these dogs are clearly wolfish. Such quality is their extreme alertness to everything new, including new people and animals.
