Humidity control

Our apartments rarely resemble winter gardens, however, do not forget about the humidity. To create a healthy microclimate in a dwelling, it is necessary to maintain not only the optimum temperature, but also humidity. When the air is too dry, we become vulnerable to many diseases, including colds that lie in wait for us in the cold season. What kind of humidity is needed to be healthy, and how to ensure an optimal microclimate?
Zone of life
The most comfortable we feel at 50-60% relative humidity. This is what she usually does in an apartment in the summer - in normal weather and normal airing. It's a pity that the summer ends quickly ... In winter, when central heating is switched on, the moisture content in the air usually does not exceed 20-25%. How can one not remember the Sahara desert with its 25% humidity? In addition to the drying air of steam heating, our home microclimate lacks moisture for other reasons.

One of them - a large number of household appliances, including air conditioners, in the very principle of work which already has the effect of dehumidifying the air in the room. In addition, the dryness of the air is facilitated by plastic double-glazed windows on the windows.
Too dry air, of course, harms our health, because of this, oxygen does not get into the bloodstream.

As a consequence , there are symptoms of oxygen deficiency: drowsiness, absent-mindedness, increased fatigue. As a result, both we and the children get tired more quickly, it becomes more difficult for us to breathe, and overall well-being worsens noticeably.
Because of the low humidity of the air, there are headaches, a feeling of tightness of the skin. In this case, the mucous membranes of the oral cavity and respiratory tract drainage, which significantly increases the risk of respiratory diseases.
Dry air is one of the main causes of allergies, it is literally saturated with allergens. In addition, it weakens the immune system of the body, which could under normal conditions fight the disease.
An unhealthy climate in the room provokes and home-grown bronchial asthma, because its main factor is home dust. The composition of this dust includes microscopic mites, and particles of woven fibers, human skin and hair, wool and saliva of domestic animals, and even spores of fungi and bacteria. It is not by chance that an allergy to house dust occurs more often than all others.

Another trouble is that in the dry air carpets and linoleum, synthetic clothing and blankets accumulate static electricity, which acts depressingly on our mood and is harmful to health.
Especially important is the moisture regime for babies and small children, because before birth the baby is in a humid environment. Any pediatrician will say that the humidity in the room where the newborn sleeps should be not less than 50%, otherwise the babies have difficulty breathing, they become restless, sleep badly. The main sources of dry air in our home are heating appliances and air conditioners.

The easiest way would be to install a humidifier in the room, but such appliances are either too expensive or give harmful side effects (such as a vacuum cleaner with a water filter). As far as such devices can cope with their task, one can learn by measuring the humidity of the air with a household hygrometer.
However, the same can be done without any instruments, using some.
The condition of patients with asthma and allergic diseases worsens.
There is a feeling of dryness of mucous membranes and skin.
Noticeably the drying of the tips of leaves in houseplants.
Static electricity accumulates ("it beats current" from clothing, curtains, animals).
Furniture and parquet are quickly drying (the floorboards creak and fall out).

There is a lot of dust in the air.
The apartment is constantly air-conditioned without a humidity regulator.
We create a healthy microclimate in the room
As often as possible and more intensively, ventilate the room with external air, turning off the appliances for this time.
Air in the apartment must be moistened, especially in the bedroom where the child sleeps.

Do not forget about regular wet cleanings.
The simplest thing is to put next to the battery any capacity with water (a vase, a jug or even an ordinary jar), into which you can throw, for example, a lemon crust or a handful of coniferous needles. It not only moistens the air, but also fills it with phytoncides, which will protect against harmful bacteria. Do not forget to change the water regularly.
You can turn the water tank into an original interior detail. Today, indoor plants are very popular, they remind us of summer days. Prefer flowers that can grow in water. For example, bamboo can be kept in a conventional flask with water, occasionally adding liquid fertilizer. This container is often filled with well washed sea stones, colored glass balls. The stalk of bamboo, which is sold in flower shops, often has a bizarre shape. A similar thing, reminiscent of Japanese ikebana, will also decorate your interior.
If you do not have the opportunity to look after plants or aquarium fish, as a simple moisturizer, a large transparent glass with water and decorative filler is also suitable. He, too, will create a good mood and moisten the over-dried air.
To form a comfortable microclimate, you can equip a small corner with indoor plants, an aquarium, a special highlight. It does not take much space near the window, where the batteries are most often located. You can use the sill as well. The contemplation of such a garden will bring pleasure to all members of the family, will allow to relax.

In this corner you can install a miniature room fountain, thanks to which from every square meter in the room will evaporate 1-2.5 liters of water per day. It saturates the air with moisture due to small sprays, and the melodious murmur of the water soothes and relaxes. You can buy it in the souvenirs department, or you can make it yourself, if, of course, you know how to work with electricity. The basis is any ready-made form (ceramic or plastic), where a special pump with nozzles is installed. This is a very powerful means of moistening the air, so it's important not to overdo it and follow the rules: ..
1. The fountain must be proportionate to the room.
2. The nozzle should provide a jet with a minimum spray of moisture.
3. The room should still be often ventilated.
4. Turn off your home fountain from time to time.
