Hyacinth - fragrant comfort for home and garden

Cultivating hyacinth properly
Hyacinth (translated from Greek as "flower of rain") was brought to us from the Mediterranean and Asia Minor. With the advent of the flower, a romantic legend is associated from Greek mythology. In the beautiful young Hyacinth, the sun god Apollo and the god of the West wind madly in love, who killed a young man in a fit of passion and jealousy. On the spot where innocent scarlet blood was spilled, a beautiful flower grew with a tender and sensitive fragrance. Apollo named him in honor of his lost love by Hyacinth.

Cultivate hyacinth in room conditions

It is necessary to know that there are three types of plant distillation:

Planting bulbs at home, choose large specimens, without damages, dots or spots, with dense uniform scales. This will ensure a beautiful flowering, faster germination and successful forcing. Keep these bulbs better in the cellar, on the balcony or fridge before planting. But in the room the temperature should not be more than twenty degrees, otherwise the flowers may not bloom.

Cultivate hyacinths in the open ground

For hyacinths, the sunny side of the garden or a little shaded is perfect. Plant them in early September in the fossa to a depth of twenty centimeters. We keep the same distance between plants. The soil must be sufficiently fertilized and well watered. After the hyacinths have faded, trim the inflorescence, and let the leaves naturally turn yellow and fall off. Thus, soil is also fertilized.

When to transplant hyacinths?

Hyacinths multiply by bulbs and seeds. The second method is most often used for breeding new varieties. But this is a rather laborious process, which sometimes takes five or even six years. And they breed flowers like that, mostly specialists. An easier method is bulbous. They are planted in autumn, before the beginning of frost. The soil is sprinkled with straw and so they winter. In spring, we release the soil, water and fertilize it. After the flowering is completed, and the leaves are already almost fallen, hyacinths must be dug and transplanted. Please note that they will not bloom without transplantation.

Popular varieties

Now on the market you can find a huge number of hyacinths: from pale blue to bright yellow. Let's look at the most popular varieties.

Late:

  • Snow Crystal-flowers 14-16 days;

  • City of Haarlem - blooms 16-18 days;

  • Hollyhock-blooms 15-19 days.

    Storage

    After you have dug out the flowers, they need to be dried in the shade for a few days, then folded into boxes and stored in shaded cool places. Dig them out in early summer, and put them in the middle of autumn. Before planting it is recommended to hold the plants slightly in the cold to prepare for the winter.

    Diseases and pests

    In the open ground hyacinths are practically not exposed to any diseases and pests. But sometimes a plant can infect bacterial rot, so that they begin to grow poorly, spots and streaks form on the petals and leaves, and the bulbs rot, producing an unpleasant odor. Affected flowers must be removed from the flower garden and burned, and the soil after them to pour a solution of potassium permanganate. In this very place hyacinths can be planted only after 4 years. The root mite can also attack the bulb. To prevent bulbs before planting, treat with a solution of colloidal sulfur (for 5 liters of water, 40 g of powder).
