Types and varieties of dracen and cordillin

Dracaena plants and cordillins related to them are spectacular trees and bushes, somewhat resembling a palm tree. The dracenes and cordillins are so similar that only specialists can distinguish them. These plants are divided into two groups. One is a slender shrub of tropical forests with dark green flexible leaves. The second group is a drought-resistant tree. Thanks to the dense crown and powerful trunk they are also called the dragon tree. Many varieties and varieties of dracen and cordillin are successfully grown in room conditions.

Cordillina

From the Greek name of the genus Cordyline translates as "tuber". And not with a simple. These plants have greatly expanded rhizomes and underground stems. Cordillins grow along the western coast of the Pacific Ocean and in Madagascar, and therefore they love moisture at home.

Cordillins more than other plants resemble a palm tree. Only much more compact and thicker (up to 1.5 meters in height). Blooming cordillins "in captivity" is very rare. Some varieties and types of cordillins have been growing here for more than 100 years. For example, Cordyline australis (Cordilina southerly), Cordillina indivisible, Cordyline fruticosa (Cordillinum shrubby), Cordyline banksii (Cordylina Banksa). They are sure to be met in the polyclinic, in the foyer of the office building, in the establishment of culture, in production, at home.

There are 15 kinds of cordillins known, and all of them can become an excellent ornament of a house or garden: Cordyline cannifolia, Cordyline congesta, Cordyline dracaenoides, Cordyline haageana, Cordyline indivisa, Cordyline manners-suttoniae, Cordyline murchisoniae, Cordyline obtecta, Cordyline petiolaris, Cordyline pomilio, Cordyline rubra , Cordyline stricta.

More often than not others in our region there is Cordillina shrub, also called borderline or apical. The plant is also known under the euphonious name "Tree of Kings". To date, a lot of luxurious varieties of this species are distinguished, differing in the color of the leaves. Cordillina shrub loves bright places, but without direct exposure to sunlight. They are recommended to be kept all year round at temperatures not lower than +18 degrees, while simultaneously providing increased humidity of air and soil.

Another common species is the southern cordillina. The plant comes from New Zealand. The most memorable variety of this species can be called Atropurpurea (Atropurpura). This variety has spectacular glossy dark purple leaves. The plant itself feels great in cool conditions, so it is ideal for a well-lit winter garden.
