12 questions about essential oils

The principle "the more the better" does not work in aromatherapy. Art is subtle, with its rather strict laws and rules of exploitation. Let's learn more about them, based on the experience of aroma experts.

1. Is it possible to enrich ready-made cosmetics with aromatic oils?
Yes. But it should be done correctly. In 1 teaspoon of face cream, 1 drop of essential oil is added. If you need to "refine" the remedy for the body - the proportions are different: up to 5 drops of esters per 1 tablespoon of the cream. And in a tablespoon of shampoo or conditioner you can add 3 drops of oil. But, unfortunately, these valuable substances are able to enter into an undesirable reaction with any of the components of industrial cosmetics. Therefore, the ideal option - in the old manner to drip ethers in the base oils.

2. And what is the base oil?
Aromatic gins in bottles are concentrated volatile compounds. In their pure form, they are not applied to the skin, since they can cause a microburn. For the same reason, they are not desirable to inhale directly from the bottle, let alone dig in the nose! For cosmetic purposes, the esters are diluted in so-called base oils. It, for example, oil of grape, apricot or peach kernels, jojoba, avocado. In theory, the basis can be any vegetable oil of the first cold pressing. For facial skin care, take 1 teaspoon base and 1 drop of essential oil, for the body - 5 drops of ether per a spoonful of "base". Want to pamper yourself with a fragrant bath? Essential oils must be dissolved in honey and (or) milk. Attention! In water, they do not dissolve and can burn the skin. Proportion: 5 drops of oil per 1 tablespoon of milk, honey or mixtures thereof.

3. How much does cosmetics with aromatic oils live?
If esters were added to a cream, shampoo or other product in an industrial way, similar cosmetics should be used within a year after opening. (Provided that the expiration date has not expired, of course.) Aromamasla - volatile compounds, they are able to evaporate. And if you yourself have introduced a fragrant substance into your cosmetic arsenal, the remedy should be used immediately. To keep such a mixture does not make sense: the ethers in it will not stay for a long time.

4. How to check the quality of essential oil?
To drop it on a strip of paper. If a few hours later there is a greasy stain, it means that the ether has been diluted with base oil before you. And even put the synthetics at all! Also, the quality is evidenced by the fragrance. Natural essential oils contain up to 500 organic components. Like expensive perfume compositions, they have an initial, cardiac and daisy notes. Therefore, if the oil smells in half an hour exactly the same as at the beginning, it makes sense to doubt its originality.

5. How to mix ethers?
Aromatherapists do not advise us to mix them. The effect can be the most unexpected. People without special skills are recommended to use aromatic oils for the body and for the soul one at a time. Those who are familiar with the laws of aromatherapy, you can make a mixture, while it is desirable not to use more than three oils simultaneously. Also it is necessary to remember that some ethers strengthen each other's action, and some - discord among themselves. For example, citrus fruits are in harmony with conifers, and lavender does not combine with rosemary. These and other subtleties are taught on special courses of aromatherapy.

6. Is it possible to create individual perfumes from aromatic oils?
Yes. The principle is the same - the esters are mixed with the base oil or with alcohol. In the first case, perfumes can be applied to the skin at once, in the second - it is necessary to insist them in a dark place. However, we repeat: without certain skills and knowledge, one should not rush headlong into perfumery. And a single ether will emphasize your personality. A simple way to please yourself and those around you with the scent is to drop a few drops of oil on a handkerchief and put it in your pocket.

And even more so, you should not take this case if the last time you did chemical experiments in school. Ethers are far from harmless: absolutely all aromatic oils are explosive and flammable. Therefore, when working with them, you must take precautions: do not open near an open fire, do not allow heating, adding them to cosmetics or base oil, wear gloves and goggles.

8. What should I do if the oil is spilled?
If the ether enters the eyes, it is necessary to rinse them with milk: ordinary water will help a little. The same actions in the event that you have spilled a clear ether on the skin or mucous membrane. There were burns? Be sure to consult a doctor. Urgent medical care is necessary and if you accidentally swallowed the essential oil.

9. Is it true that oils cause allergies?
Unfortunately yes. It appears with a rash, itching, a runny nose, a cough, swelling - as well as any other substance. Therefore, it is advisable to conduct a preliminary test, especially if you are allergic: mixed with the base oil, the ether is applied to the wrist. Also, some aromatic oils (for example, citrus) intensify photosensitivity - the skin reaction to ultraviolet rays. Do not tan when using natural oils. Individual intolerance of this or that oil is also possible.
