Care of houseplants: bokarneya

Nolina Michx - so in Latin is called the genus of plants Nolin, it is also called Bokarnee, and in Latin Beaucarnea Lem. The genus of these plants includes about 30 varieties of agave. They are distributed in the territory of Mexico. But this plant is grown in room conditions, as we are more detailed and will tell in today's article "Care of houseplants: bokarneya."

When talking about these plants, imagine small trees that have a stylishly swollen base of the trunk, it accumulates water, which allows plants to survive where the rains happen only a couple of times in 12 months. Nolines are helped in these, rather unfavorable, conditions to survive and leaves. They are narrow, and in the heat they can gather into bundles, very dense to the touch. Due to this ability, evaporation of moisture from the leaf surface is reduced.

This plant is interesting for growing as a single, quite undemanding, indoor plant. In the swollen, bulb-like base, water is retained, so if it is not watered for a long time, it will not bring the plant any particular harm. Thanks to this swollen base, the English plant is called the "elephant leg", and thanks to the crown of leaves that resemble belts, "horse tail". In the market of our country this is the most common tree, which is called "bottle".

Such trees, storing moisture in a thick, bloated base, are very popular among those who like to plant indoor plants. And they are popular because they do not need to be carefully looked after. They are hardy, do not require air humidity, calmly tolerate temperature jumps, plus they have an unusual, rather original appearance.

In nylon rootlets grow not in depth, but in breadth. On the native territory the plant can be seen on soil from stones, where the fertile layer is absolutely shallow. Therefore, plants need to select broad, shallow pots. They need a good drainage device. On the surface of the earth in the pot you can pour a little gravel. This will protect against the formation of crust, and yet emphasize the beauty of the plant.

This plant, especially if it is large, looks great as a focal element. It can perfectly fit into the interior with modern design execution, for example, in such styles as fusion and high-tech.

Bokarney: its kinds.

As mentioned above, the genus of this plant includes about 30 varieties. Nevertheless, in the trading network, mostly comes nolin bent. In Latin its name sounds like Nolina recurvata Hems, it is also known as bokarnej bent, which in Latin sounds like Beaucarnea recurvata lem.

There is also small-fruited N. and N. long-leafed. In Latin these names sound like N. Microcarpa S. Wats and N. longifolia Hems. These varieties are found on the territory of the Crimea and the Caucasus, as a rule, in parks.

Bokarney: caring for indoor plants.

This plant is rather unpretentious, it is easy to grow, even for those who are just beginning to be interested in floriculture. It is better for a plant to pick up an illuminated place, but without direct light. In winter-autumn, it is necessary to illuminate the bokarney with the help of daylight lamps.

In the spring months and summer time, Nolina is well "at home" at room temperatures. The only thing is to protect her from drafts, because she is very afraid of them. You can take the plant outside, but to avoid rain and wind.

In autumn and in winter, caring for plants of this species assumes the organization of conditions for rest, gradually lowering the temperature somewhere up to 10 degrees. If you have experience in growing succulents and cacti, then you will manage to keep this plant in a period of rest at 5 degrees of heat.

In the summer months and in the spring, the plant should be watered and often watered. It is possible (and necessary) to use the so-called "lower" watering, when a container with a plant is placed in a basin of water and kept until the upper part of the earth gets wet. Then drain the excess water and put in place. Next time, the plant should be watered when the soil in the pot completely dries. If you want to keep a valine without a period of rest, then it should be watered, as in the summer. If in winter the temperature of the plant is high, then the humidity of the surrounding air should also be increased and sometimes sprayed. If the temperature is about 15 degrees, then water should be more moderate, and at a temperature of 10 degrees watering should be stopped altogether. Do not forget that nolin is a plant from the desert, for him, as for other plants of this type, excessive moisture is harmful. This is more than relevant for keeping the plant in winter. To avoid excess moisture, it is necessary to use the drip method when watering.

When the plant is kept in indoor conditions, it is not necessary to spray it, sometimes the leaves need only be wiped with a cloth (sponge). In the wild, these plants, collecting water, collect dew, which falls abundantly in the homeland of Nolin. Collect the dew leaves, resembling troughs, along them dew flows down the trunk to the root, and then it accumulates at the base of the stem. So the lack of water and compensated. With the content of Nolines, it is possible to simulate the loss of dew by sprinkling the plant with boiled water. Do not do this in the midday heat. It is better to do this in the evening or in the morning.

Bare closer fit dishes, shallow, but fairly wide. The bottom should be with a hole to remove excess moisture. Above the bottom should be arranged a wide drainage, for example, from expanded clay. This will allow the water not to stagnate and rot away from the roots. The root system of the plant grows not in depth, but in width. On the surface of the earth you can pour stones. This will add more decorating to the bob and will help to prevent the hardening of the earth and the formation of a crust on its surface.

Plants must be transplanted when the roots completely weave the ground, and not deeper than the plant grew before. Adult plants must be transplanted every 4 years, and young plants every 12 months. After the plant is transplanted, you do not need to water it for the first few days, let it take root.

To grow the plant faster, it should be transferred to a wider pot in spring. The soil for transplantation should not be solid and consist of peat, leaf earth, humus with sand. You can use ground sod, leaf, peat and humus with sand in the same parts. You can mix the garden land with sand with large grains and add small gravel.

A hydroponic method can be used to grow the plant.
