Songs of the Ukrainian singer Jamala

She burst into the musical world on the "New Wave" a bird of paradise in exotic plumage - a four-octave voice, an "unglangly" manner of performance and an unusual bright image ... Her otherness is felt in everything - how she is filled to the brim with music, in tremulous faith in the "burning eye", in some unusual, sincere sincerity.

In the "puppet theater" of domestic show business, Jamal has no "role" - it goes its own way. This is exactly what I want to talk about. Songs of the Ukrainian singer Jamala really listen everywhere, and today we will tell why this girl is so popular.

Jamala, when asked about your nationality, you once answered that you are an alien. Tell us about your "planet" and its "inhabitants." The most expensive planet for me is my house, my father, my mother and my sister. And recently, also my miracle-tribe, Ediyoshka. I am very proud of my rattling mixture of Crimean-Tatar, Armenian, Polish and Russian blood. The family gave me everything: upbringing, the basic concepts of good and evil and, most importantly, a good musical taste. My parents are also musicians. Mom is a pianist, father is an accordionist and conductor, and Sister Evelina is a unique performer on dombra. Now my sister lives in Turkey, but continues to study music - she teaches children. Do you have music "in kind"? If you immerse yourself in the genealogy, you can reach the famous composer Aram Khachaturian on the mother's line. On the part of the pope are also musical ancestors. I remember that my grandmother taught me in childhood a folk Tatar song. From her father and I got a special timbre of voice. Genes are wonderful. I do not have the same way as Saint-Exupery, there is only one rose on the planet, I have a lot of them (smiles). It is very important for me to protect, cherish, "water", so that they feel how important they are to me. Did you have an "oriental" upbringing? Did it impose any prohibitions on you? Of course! And I still feel it. In my family it was not accepted that the movies "up to 16" were viewed by the whole family. It was not accepted to drink alcoholic drinks, trips to discos were excluded. Even on my prom night my dad was waiting for me at home at 10pm. But I'm not offended at my parents. I never thought it was wrong. Now I can go to any clubs, but upbringing still affects. I always know with which company to go and what is good for me and what is bad.

How did music come into your life? My mother told me that when I was 3 years old, the teacher prepared a song with Mishka with a doll and stomped me up briskly and arranged a concert in the manger for the children and parents. The adults were amazed at the purity of the intonation, because at 3 years old children, as a rule, Since then my mother decided to develop my musical abilities, first she put me children's songs, then the records of Ella Fitzgerald and other outstanding performers went to play. Did you like to sing?

Oh, I was often scolded, but I sing all the time! I sang at school, on the way from school, at home at dinner ... I remember, they told me: "Do not go to the table and marry a gypsy." Therefore, when after the 9th class it was time to determine the profession, there was no doubt. I knew that I would enter the music school. Since then, I and music are inseparable. How and when did Susana Jamaladinova become Jamalah? For the first time the name of Jamal was heard at a meeting with Svetlana Remakova, a famous stylist and make-up artist. We were four of us: I, Sveta, Olga Navrotskaya and Lena Kolyadenko. Invented me a stage name. They began to sort out the options. "Susana" seemed too soft name, not very suitable music and style. And the name sounded good, but it was too long. It seems that Navrotskaya was the first to say "Jamala". I remembered that Jamal is one of the 99 sacred names of Allah. And it means "Beautiful". Everyone liked it, and we settled on this option. "The new wave" has given a powerful impetus to your career. Did any qualitative changes take place in your music? Naturally! When I was interviewed immediately after the "Wave", I said that I write songs, but still I am going to work with professional composers and poets. Said: "Send songs to me by e-mail!" I received many suggestions. But with all due respect to the authors, I could not choose anything for my repertoire. After the "Wave" our cooperation moved to a different level, and Elena began to perform also the functions of the producer. But the further we advanced, the clearer I realized that we wanted different things. I love pop music, but I do not want to limit it. For me it's very important not to forget jazz, funk, soul, rhythm and blues, classics. And I chose the path that I need to go now. I can only work with a team that strives for the same goals as I do. Perhaps, the path chosen by me will be longer. The important thing is that now I am again with people who share my point of view! What are your plans today? First of all - this is the release of the first album, a big solo concert, as well as recording new songs in the US together with American producer Walter Afanasyev. In which musical direction are you going to move?

You know, in fact, it does not matter what style or direction is called. The main thing is to have music. You can experiment in a wide variety of ways. You can sing opera, jazz, soul. It is important that your personality, personality is manifested in it, and after years people could say: "Oh, this is in the style of Jamala!" You often say that there must be a "burning eye" - what does this mean for you? All! "Burning eye" is charisma! Without a "burning eye" in any profession, a person can not succeed. When you have eyes burning, people smile back, believe you and are ready to help you in every way. You absolutely do not fit into the traditional image of the "heroine of show business." Are not you afraid that such a "non-format" will interfere with a career? Not afraid. Music, concerts ... What else is there in the life of Jamala, apart from music? What else delivers the same pleasure? Food and water. I mean, the sea (smiles). I love the sea. Although any open water body calms me and brings joy. And how do you see your personal destiny? Of course, like any normal girl, I want to get married and have children. But it will most likely not be in the near future. I dream that my future husband and children will love my profession and my music. And I am sure that it will be so.

Are you a home person? Do you like to cook, equip the house? I like to be at home, especially in Crimea, with my parents. You feel protected, relaxed, my mother brings all sorts of goodies ... But I do not like cooking. And at home, I'm sorry, a creative mess. The best vacation for you is ... Dream. Sleep and food. More precisely, sleep and food on the beach. And do you have any purely feminine weaknesses? I like beautiful clothes. For example, I see shoes, I know that I already have similar ones, but these differ slightly ... But all the same I can not deny myself - I buy. I love ears, I love compliments and to my address, and to my music (laughs). What does Jamal dream about? About a large beautiful house with palm trees around, to which I will return home after a tour of Europe and America and relax by the pool. In my house there will be a studio and a big stage, because I can not sing without singing for a long time. There will come friends-musicians, record their songs, arrange jams. I hope, and Stevie Wonder will look sometime (smiles).

Jamala advises:

Jamala shares a recipe for Uzbek pilaf:

This dish at us - family, it at me associates with the childhood and the grandmother's tastes. For 4 portions we need: rice - 1 kg, lamb - 800 g, fat - 400 g, carrots - 800 g, onion - 500 g, 1 bunch of greens, salt and spices to taste. Rice is washed and soaked. Lamb cut into pieces, onion rings, carrot shredded. A single peeled onion and peeled meat bone is fried in heavily heated fat. Then take them out, put the pieces of mutton and chopped onion and fry until a ruddy crust is formed. Add the shredded carrots, spices and fry for another 8-10 minutes. Fill with water, salt, put rice (water should be about one and a half times more than rice), we bring it to readiness. We lay out the ready pilaf with a slide, decorate with greens and pieces of meat. Bon Appetit!
