Combine incompatible: interior in eclectic styles

At first glance, a person who is far from the theory of design, it may seem that the eclecticism in the interior is a senseless mixture of styles and textures. But such an impression is wrong: to create an interior in an eclectic style, you need to find a fine line between true style and tasteless kitsch. About the peculiarities of this unusual and at times shocking design we will tell you in today's article.

What is eclecticism?

To begin with, in order to understand the essence of this style, we note that in the translation from Greek "eclecticism" is the chosen one, selective. In other words, eclectic design means selectivity of individual elements and key moments from different styles and their combination. Most often for the creation of an interior in the style of eclecticism are used close in spirit directions, for example, baroque and modern, provence and country, classics and Empire. Such combinations of 2-3 related styles, which form the basis of the interior, are complemented by elements from contrasting directions. Often, designers manage to combine the luxury of the Empire style, the simplicity of the Provence and the brightness of the eastern interior in one room.

Its flourishing this direction survived at the beginning of the last century, when many designers and stylists in search of fresh ideas began to mix different stylistic solutions. As a result, a unique eclectic style arose, which today besides interior design is adequately represented in architecture, furniture, accessories and clothes.

Basic rules of eclecticism in the interior

But despite the apparent simplicity, eclecticism is a very complex and multifaceted style, which not every designer can master. It is very easy to cross the line between stylish eccentricity and tasteless epatage. That is why when decorating an interior in an eclectic spirit it is so important to observe several main rules. First, the main note of the room should be set no more than 2-3 close styles. Secondly, the main accent of the interior is furniture from different eras and directions. That the interior items are not out of the general idea, you must necessarily combine them with a common accent. This effect is most often achieved with the help of a similar color scheme and similar textures. Thirdly, the interior should be comfortable and functional. Therefore, it is better to choose natural shades, natural materials and functional furniture. And, fourthly, do not forget about the details. Let the main note in the eclectic and set the furniture, but the main color accents remain for all sorts of accessories. Therefore, be sure to use paintings, posters, photographs, vases, candlesticks, sculptures, many textiles and various geometric patterns.
