Smoking in adolescence, how to deal with it

The main principle of teenagers is obedience to the rules of the collective in everything, even if it is unpleasant and unusual. Psychologists call this conformism - when a person prefers to choose the group's opinion to the detriment of their own. And the man himself suffers from this. Especially for today, smoking is actual in adolescence, as we will tell you more about this.

Adolescents just demonstrate conformism in communicating with peers, and negativity in communicating with parents is conformism on the contrary. This is particularly true of those adults who have matured, who have not yet clearly formulated their life goals. After all, only a strong person can defend his positions in the group, remembering the three basic rules of the individual:

- do what is best for him;

- choose yourself;

- to change the decision at own discretion, to no one justifying themselves.

And since the basis of manipulation is always the use of weaknesses of the interlocutor (for example, curiosity, unwillingness to appear a coward), the teenager is subconsciously disposed to not render them. So, unbeknownst to yourself, the child is dragged into unsightly situations or acquires bad habits.

Memo to parents

First, do not make scandals - this can cause the opposite effect, or the child will simply become more carefully disguised. Better calmly tell me what the health consequences of smoking. Arguments should not only be reasoned scientifically, but also motivated by everyday life.

And also you need:

- Tell the child how upset and worried you are that he smokes, and build a warm relationship with him;

- encourage sports and other activities - then it will simply be no smoking, uninteresting, or even simply unacceptable;

- invite his friends (probably also smokers) to his home and show them videos about the irreversible consequences of smoking - believe me, it's impressive;

- talk with the teachers about the possibility to invite to the school a lecturer, who will describe the consequences of smoking competently and "in color";

- give to read to a teenager one of the books of the relevant subject (we will show you);

- more often focus on the immediate "minuses" of smoking: less money for something else, shortness of breath, bad breath, yellow teeth, unpleasant odor clothing;

- if the child says: "I can quit as soon as I want," ask him to demonstrate it within a week;

- help the teenager develop a plan "How to quit smoking" and offer information resources to help (do not forget to praise for a worthy choice);

- Remove from the prominent places of cigarettes (or better - and quit smoking), because the best method to combat smoking with children is the example of parents.

Do not:

- To say that you will not love your child because he smokes;

- break down into a cry or talk with him in the style of a "lecture-sermon".

Memo for a teenager

Realize and clearly formulate why you want to get rid of the harmful habit of smoking in adolescence, how to deal with it and how to avoid it. Make a list of your motives (excellent sleep and health, calm nervous system, stress resistance, improvement of relations with parents). Try to imagine brightly your lungs, thoroughly spoiled by smoking.

Imagine yourself and your excellent health after getting rid of this bad habit,

Decide for yourself that whenever you want to smoke, perform a certain ritual (for example, 50 push-ups), then again think about whether you will smoke or not.

Do sports - it helps a lot.

Important! If the group is "pressed" by the group, the most correct thing is to take the technique of constructive resistance: take a firm stand, do not wriggle and do not come up with "valid" reasons.
