What girls can learn from programmers, or how Scrum helps in everyday life

Scrum is a project management technique that is very popular among programmers. It would seem - where programmers, and where household concerns - but everything is much easier than you think. Scrum can be used anywhere - for house repairs, child training or regular Sunday cleaning. The book "Scrum", published by the publishing house "Mann, Ivanov and Ferber", proves this theory. Let's find out how Scrum helps in everyday life.

What is Scrum

Scrum is a method of project management. This method was invented by American programmer Jeff Sutherland, as he was tired of fighting the drawbacks of the classical approach to creating new products. And Sutherland made it as simple and accessible as possible. In order to start using this technique, you need to install a whiteboard or a cardboard with three columns: "You need to do it", "In work" and "Done". In each of the columns there are stickers with inscriptions. Stickers are ideas and tasks that need to be realized in a certain period of time (for example, for one week). As they are being executed, you need to move the stickers from one column to the other. Once all tasks have been moved to the last column, you should analyze the pros and cons of the work, and then move on to the next project.

Who uses Scrum

Initially, Scrum was created in order to speed up the efficiency of the development department. However, in our time this method can be used in any field. In the book "Scrum" the author tells about the use of methodology among automakers, pharmacists, farmers, schoolchildren and even FBI employees. In other words, Scrum can be used by any group of people who want to achieve high results.

Scrum and repair

Repair always takes more time and requires more money than originally planned. This was no doubt even the author of the method Scrum, but Elko's neighbor changed his mind. Elko managed to get hired workers to work on the principle of a scram-command - every morning he gathered builders, electricians and other workers, they discussed what was done, made plans for the day and tried to figure out what prevents them from moving forward. Each of these actions, Elko, together with the workers, noted on the skram board. And it worked. A month later, the repair was completed, and Elko's family returned to the renovated house.

Scrum at school

In the town of Alphen-an-den-Rein, in the western part of the Netherlands, there is an average general education school called "Asylum". In this very school from the first day of schooling, the chemistry teacher Willie Weinands uses the Scrum methodology. The process is fully automated: students move stickers with these tasks from the column "All tasks" to the column "You need to execute", open books and learn new material. And it works! Thanks to Scrum, the students independently study the material in a short time, do not depend on the teacher and demonstrate high results.

Scrum in everyday life

As you can see, absolutely with any task you can deal quickly and efficiently, if you use Scrum. Already today you can prepare a blackboard and write home tasks that you need to complete within a week. Or plan a weekend, during which you can visit as many cultural sites as possible. Or learn a new language, breaking the approach to its development into small steps. And once your tasks are in the "Made" column, you yourself will be surprised how quickly and simply you could achieve the result. Scrum will help you out in any situation. Effective methods for managing projects, as well as successful stories of applying the methodology, you will find in the book "Scrum".
