Melt the sugar in a medium frying pan over medium-high heat, stirring constantly. In a small bowl, whip the rum with cornstarch. Whisk the milk and egg yolks in a bowl over medium heat for 30 seconds. Add a mixture of cornstarch and rum, stirring constantly. Add the melted sugar and half a cup of boiling water. Pour the mixture into a steamer and cook for 15 to 20 minutes. Add the vanilla extract and mix. Pour fondue into special dishes (sold both in sets, and separately). Serve fondue with strawberries slices of lime, banana or marshmallow.
