Suicide: how to prevent the irreparable?

According to the State Scientific Center for Social and Forensic Psychiatry. V. Serbsky, Russia ranks third in the world in the number of suicides. Every year, more than fifty-five thousand Russians voluntarily give up their lives. This is almost twice as many as the number of road traffic victims and slightly less than a third of the total number of deaths in Russia for the year. The reasons can be different. Some do not withstand the difficulties encountered in life, others can not cope with the bitterness of the loss of a loved one, someone chooses death from despair, and sometimes it seems as if a person has no apparent reason for committing suicide. Therefore, it is especially important to recognize and prevent a possible tragedy in time.

And although the reasons for each potential suicide are different, psychologists were able to identify the pattern of behavior in people planning to commit suicide. Thus, it becomes possible to identify the suicidal intentions of a person if they are similar to some of the main signs of manifestations of suicidal intentions.

Suicidal behavior, as a rule, is accompanied by depression. A person with such behavior is reduced attention, it is more difficult to concentrate and think clearly, he becomes indecisive, withdrawn, and strives for solitude. Contacts are broken, including sexual desire, but a sense of inferiority, uselessness develops. A potential suicider loses respect for himself and an interest in what used to be dear to him. Situations that used to evoke positive emotions in him no longer bring satisfaction. The habitual sleep regimes are broken, insomnia comes or vice versa, increased drowsiness, and with it comes chronic fatigue, lethargy. It seems that a person becomes too lazy to even talk - speech and movements are slowed down, appetite is lost, and as a consequence, loss or weight gain is possible. What can we say about the effectiveness of any of its activities? A potential suicide becomes pessimistic about the future and towards itself in it, it loses its ability to respond adequately to praise and rejoice at the gifts that life gives to it. There comes a bitter sadness, and sometimes even tears. A person constantly thinks about death, and sometimes even openly expresses to his relatives, loved ones, his desire to commit suicide. However, because of indecision, indirect hints are more likely. A suicider, for example, may appear in the circle of friends with a rope, a tie, telephone wire or other object simulating a noose around his neck. It is possible to play with an object resembling a pistol or a gun. The suicide tries to shoot herself from such a "toy" weapon.

The idea of suicide completely captures the person. He thoroughly prepares for the coming event. He can seek funds for suicide, for example, tablets, poisonous or explosive substances, piercing-cutting objects. The most common is a detail, like a symbolic farewell to the nearest environment. This can be expressed in the distribution of debts or their personal belongings, photographs, hours, attempts to apologize, etc. The very behavior of a person changes. If before he was sociable and mobile, now it may be unusual for him to be closed, unsociable, reduced motor activity. Possible and the reverse process - a meek and calm "quiet" begins to behave unusually violently, excitedly. In this case, there are frequent conversations about suicides and the discussion of such cases.

Be attentive to your loved ones. Perhaps the behavior that you did not notice before them is not a signal to the disaster, and maybe this is the "alarm bell" you should listen to in order to prevent a tragedy and bring back the person who is dear to you. Remember - your vigilance can save someone's life!
