Criticism of the theory of nutrition by blood group

Many findings in dietetics are subject to the well-known expression "the dream of the mind gives birth to monsters": they sometimes completely lack the scientific justification, but from someone else's submissions these inventions come into vogue and force them to lose weight almost as a panacea.

Among such diets - and the brainchild of Peter D'Adamo, the provisions of the theory of which sound very scientific, even fundamental, so that it is difficult for a specialist to see a dirty trick. The author is a professional, an American naturopathic doctor in the second generation; under the developed diet, he unsuccessfully tried to bring a very plausible scientific basis. Under the influence of this teaching, there were simply those who wanted to normalize their weight, and professional athletes, for whom special series of products such as "AV0" appeared in sports nutrition stores. Only science here is not enough - so, in any case, numerous critics of theories of nutrition by the blood group claim.

According to this theory, the blood group determines the most important factors in human life, for example, the choice of food style, the number of foods consumed, the optimal regime of the day, the response to stress and ways to counteract it, ways to strengthen immunity.

The author has "found" the key to understanding the role of the blood group in human activity in the evolution of mankind. Thus, the I blood group is considered the oldest, the second group is associated with the beginning of farming, the appearance of group III is due to the movement of people to the northern regions with a harsher, colder climate, and group IV is generally the result of a combination of opposing groups. And when choosing food products, the ability of erythrocytes to bind to different substances is taken into account, that is, the use of "foreign" products for their blood group causes "gluing" of plasma proteins with blood elements and saturation of the body with toxins. And nutrition, taking into account "his" blood group, on the contrary, cleanses the body and gradually normalizes weight.

People with the first - the oldest - blood group (0) belong to the type of "hunters", respectively, they need to eat mainly meat food. Those who have the second blood group (A) belong to the "farmers" and must adhere to the vegetarian diet. Both those and others are recommended to almost completely remove the dairy products from the diet. People with a third blood group (B) are classified as "nomads" and "sentenced" to refuse products based on cereals, but must eat dairy products. And the owners of the fourth blood group (AB), called "new people", supposedly should eat mainly lamb, venison, fermented milk products, vegetables and fruits.

Russian doctors are still debating about this diet and the rightness of its developer, and in the rest of the world the postulates of this theory have been unequivocally and long ago called "not science but science fiction".

Criticism of the theory of nutrition in the blood group is based on the "historical aspect." The author relies on the theory of Ludwig Hirtzfelda, which considers the unified origin of all blood groups - and she herself is sharply criticized by many scientists. A rejection of this theory destroys the foundation on which the diet is built. And who can say with confidence that the hunters did not at all engage in hunting alongside hunting, and did not at all eat vegetarian food? And the same farmers could not combine crop production with the breeding of livestock, and in the lean years and return to hunting? Claims about the use of only the same type of food by the owners of one blood group are very unfounded.

Having a medical education, D'Adamo was obliged to know the convention of dividing into four blood groups. Why did he not take into account the Rh factor? In addition to Rhesus antigens, there are still weak "erythrocyte" antigens, and a lot of antigens of leukocyte, tissue and plasma - with their consideration, you can now count about forty blood groups (Duffy, Kell, Kidd, MNSs), but the author only took into account the ability binding of red blood cells to other substances.

Proteins from food enter the bloodstream not in its original form, but split into amino acids - there are about two hundred of them. The composition of different proteins is different, but there are no "tags" on the immutable amino acid molecules, from what kind of protein they are obtained - dairy, vegetable or meat.

True, D'Adamo later replaced the term "amino acids" with "lectins," but their theme is even more complex: these "hydrocarbon-sensing proteins" are important in the recognition of the genetic code, and the role of lectins in the cell is not fully explained to this day. Only their participation in the recognition of individual tissues by cells is known, which is important in the work of hormones. And some of the lectins cause erythrocyte agglutination in a person in different ways, depending on the blood group. But to connect this fact with food it was necessary to try still - the calculation was made on scientific terms, in which the common man in the street could not be understood. So science was replaced even by science fiction ...

The fact that the state of the organism as a whole, and hence also the various prohibitions in eating, is also missing is associated not only with the blood group. By appointing a diet to a specific person, physicians conduct a study of the social and psychological background and versatile analyzes and studies to identify the cause of the disease.

Born in the United States, D'ADAMO's theory is most explored there, and studies have established that "indeed, some percentage of the owners of one blood group show an affinity for certain foods. This percentage is not too large and does not give grounds for unambiguous conclusions. Using a diet for the blood group either does not have any effect at all, or it gives a short-term effect. " Nutritionists consider this method to have no serious scientific justification.

A selection of food products based on the blood group necessarily leads to various distortions and impoverishment of the organism by certain components - vitamins, minerals, trace elements - in a particular person. It is clear that a complete rejection of dairy products will provoke calcium deficiency and can lead to osteoporosis, the rejection of meat will cause anemia due to iron deficiency, etc.

Sufferers overweight for getting rid of extra pounds are ready to believe any fiction and go for anyone offering a quick way to lose weight. This is often used by dealers trying to earn on obese people. In the commercial approach to the problem, there is nothing reprehensible - no one has yet canceled money. But the desire of the grief specialists to sell people for their own money, questionable methods and preparations can not cause admiration.
