Left-handedness: the physiological aspects of left-handedness

For some parents, the left-handedness of a child is a signal to start a fight. They are sure that the child needs to be retrained as soon as possible, to instill the "right" skills, otherwise the child will have problems in the garden, school and life in a couple of years. Some parents perceive the fact of left-handedness of their baby quietly, but about retraining they say: "This is the same as making a child walk in his arms! He will not be happier and more successful, but the neurosis and a bunch of complexes will definitely work. " Which of them is right? So, left-handedness: the physiological aspects of left-handedness are the topic of conversation for today.

Where does this come from?

Our brain, as is known, consists of two hemispheres - right and left. Each of them performs its function, because in that, and in the other are concentrated different centers of human life. Thus, the left is responsible for specific thinking and speech, the right is the center of musical and artistic creativity, imaginative thinking.

The right hemisphere controls the left side of the body, the left hemisphere controls the right side. In most people, the hemispheres are unequal, one of them dominates: if the left is more active, a person becomes right-handed when he "tops" the right-hand side with a left-handed person. By the way, let's clarify: the concept of "southpaw" is not quite right. It will be more correct to say "left-handed", for an absolute left-hander, and there are few such in the world, the left ear, eye, and leg play a leading role besides the hand. Parents should be clearly understood: left-handedness is one of the variants of normal development of the organism, connected with the peculiarities of the work of the brain.

Draw a portrait of a left-handed child

Observing such children, scientists, psychologists, doctors found much in common in their development, behavior, character, inclinations. We hope that moms and dads will find a lot of attractive little left-handers in the generalized portrait.

So, they are more emotional, impressionable, spontaneous, trusting, vulnerable, capricious. At the same time they are persevering in the realization of desires, they are sensitive to the opinion of their relatives. Young left-handers, like the left-handed teenagers, have a sharp sense of justice. They are big dreamers and dreamers, their imagination can only be envied. Is that why among the lefties there are many creative personalities? From the age of three they are, at times, much better right-handers draw and mold, demonstrate an absolute hearing. In addition, many talented mathematicians, outstanding athletes are among the left-handed people.

At the same time, left-handers often right-handed peers suffer from delays in speech development, have difficulty in pronouncing sounds, mastering reading and writing. But, ultimately, with a competent approach to learning, all this, undoubtedly, will be successfully overcome. An example of this is the outstanding left-handers - historical figures and contemporaries: Julius Caesar, Alexander the Great, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Rembrandt, Mozart, Napoleon Bonaparte, Mikhail Lomonosov, Alexander Pushkin, Lev Tolstoy, Friedrich Nietzsche, Vladimir Dal, Vasily Surikov, Albert Einstein, Van Gogh, Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Charlie Chaplin, Sting, Julia Roberts, Angelina Jolie, Paul McCartney, Bill Clinton and computer genius Bill Gates. As you can see, the left-handers have given mankind geniuses in various fields. And after that, do you still think left-handedness is a serious blemish?

Left-handed or not? We define correctly.

To determine which type of handle the baby has, check which hand it will reach for the rattles hanging before it, which one will take the toy, and when it grows up, it will stack the pyramid from the cubes, which pencil will take, throw the ball, keep the spoon, etc. For older children, offer: comb (which hand will take the brush); clap your hands so that one of the hands is on top (which is the hand); applaud (with which hand the shock actions are performed more actively); cross your arms over your chest (the forearm of which arm will be on top).

Adaptation and development of left-handed children

The process of adapting the left-hander in our world is not easy. After all, almost everything that surrounds the baby is designed for right-handed people: starting with ordinary scissors and ending with a wristwatch. And in the future, add, for example, car control devices, also designed for right-handed people. But the car is a distant prospect. In childhood, it is much more important to help a child learn the letter and reading, taking into account the physiological aspects of left-handedness.

Leading left-handers need to develop from an early age. For example, suggest that children untie shoelaces, shift small toys from one container to another, fasten and unfasten buttons - all this, of course, with your left hand. Ask the child to put it on the table, and let it take turns taking each finger off the surface. The palm itself must be snug against the table.

Prior to school, it is desirable to minimize reading, writing, foreign languages, that is, those activities where the child expects failures that reduce the level of his self-esteem. And in the primary classes for lefties, a traditional curriculum is preferable, excluding additional loads, electives and the like.

When organizing the place of classes, remember: the light from the window or from the desk lamp should fall from the right side. Take care that in school the child also sits at the desk on the left, otherwise his elbow will constantly face the right elbow of the neighbor.

When teaching for left-handed children, it is important to have sensory sensations - visual, tactile. Therefore, to make the child better understand and memorize the educational material, use drawings, visual aids, diagrams, diagrams, graphs. Do not be too lazy to make the same letters or numbers volumetric - to mold from plasticine, cut out of thick fabric.

The main thing - to monitor the behavior

Given the increased emotionality and extreme impressionability of the left-handed carapaces, be doubly sensitive, friendly, tactful with them. Do not overdo with the observance of a regime, strict adherence to which for many can prove prohibitively difficult.

In no case do not stress the difference between your child and your peers, on the contrary, encourage and praise in every possible way. Having matured, he, naturally, and himself will notice his dissimilarity, but by this time will perfectly learn to go with her through life.

Leave it as it is. And a point!

Are you still going to make a "right-handed" person from a left-handed child? It remains only to sincerely sympathize with the kid, and you, because the consequences of such violence over the carapace (and in other words you will not name it) can be unpredictable.

The child's leading hand can not be "appointed" at its discretion. It seems to you, retraining is simply shifting the fork or handle from the left hand to the right one. In reality, it is an attempt to change the work of the cerebral hemispheres, shifting the innate functions of the leading left-hander to the left hemisphere. By retraining a child, we, no matter how many, try to remake his biological nature.

As a result, the child risks becoming irritable, quick-tempered, capricious, whiny. Often, the left-handed people have a whole bouquet of neurological problems: violations of appetite and sleep, fears, enuresis, tics, stuttering. Children complain of headaches, fatigue in the right hand, increased fatigue and reduced efficiency. And with such problems they can hardly adequately "pull" the school curriculum.

A small left-hander has two ways: either he, like any ordinary child, will normally grow and develop, while writing and eating with his left hand, or you will force him to do the same with the right hand, almost certainly turning him into a neurotic. Love and perceive your blood as it is, and then left-handedness with the physiological aspects of left-handedness will never turn into a problem for you and for him!
